QUESTION POSED ON: 05 May 2003
I've been working as PC technician for past three years. I wanted to move forwards towards CCNA and CCNP. I have only completed my MCP certification. I have not finished my MCSE. What do you think I should do first, MCSE or CCNA, CCNP?

If I pass my CCNA and CCNP certifications what kind of job do you think I might be qualified for -- with my three years experience in IT field as a PC tech. Which tools and books would you recommend I read to prepare for CCNA and CCNP.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Your plans don't sound unreasonable provided you want to work on the network infrastructure side of the IT business, which is what the Cisco professional certification you plan to pursue would most qualify you to work on. The kinds of jobs you'd be most qualified for would have titles like network administrator, network analyst, or perhaps network engineer. You'll find lots of great titles on these certifications available, particularly from Cisco Press (www.ciscopress.com); Todd Lammle's book for Sybex on CCNA, CCNP are also pretty highly regarded (visit an online bookstore and search on the certification acronym--that is, CCNA or CCNP -- in the book title field to see what's available).
